Bali

Our efforts on Bali focus on sea turtle conservation, children’s homes and after-school programs, water filter distribution, trash clean-up, and care for the at-risk population.

Day 1: Arrivals & orientation

A trip leader will meet you at the airport and you’ll be shuttled to the hotel for check-in. Once you're settled and unpacked, you can relax by the pool or start exploring the town right away until we meet as a group for dinner. You'll get a chance to meet your fellow travelers and taste the exquisite cuisine of Bali. Representatives from Nourishing Nomads will speak to the group about the work we are doing around the island. After dinner, the rest of the night is yours. With shops, massages, and local attractions steps from your door, there is plenty to explore.

Day 2: Volunteer day

Our first full day will take us into remote villages where we will bring supplies and food to the elderly and disabled. On the way, we’ll stop at a sacred temple or local market where you can purchase handmade crafts. Depending on time and need, we may be able to add a water filter distribution and education session about the importance of clean water and how to care for the filtration systems. We usually stop along the way home to clean up a beach or jungle area that’s covered in plastic waste. Once we’re back at the hotel, the night is yours.

Day 3: Turtle Conservation Center

This morning is for you to recover from a long day. Enjoy a massage nearby or a surfing lesson, or just lounge by the pool and soak in the sun! We’ll meet as a group early afternoon to make our way to the sea turtle conservation and rehabilitation foundation where we’ll assist in the day-to-day operations of the foundation: cleaning the tanks, administering medicine to sick and baby turtles, preparing their food, and learning about the efforts and successes of this foundation.

Day 4: Cultural day

Today is about engaging in Balinese culture. You have the day to yourself with optional outings available at an additional cost. Your trip leaders will help arrange drivers and guides, offer great recommendations, and make sure you spend your time having fun instead of researching how to. Here's just a sample of what's available: learn to make prayer offerings, take a day trip to Ubud, visit Uluwatu temple, or become a Balinese chef at a local cooking class.

Day 5: Children’s home

This day will take us deep into the northeast of Bali where we support the development of 20 children who have been taken off the streets, given up for adoption, or abandoned. In our effort to enable these children to lead fulfilling lives and advance their education, we provide the necessary supplies to help these children and this home reach their goals. We’ll play games, practice English (and learn some Bhasa), help with housework or garden work, and learn about how the home operates to set these kids up for success. We’ll stop for sunset over the Lombok Strait on the drive home.

Day 6: Cultural day - suggested: Mt Batur sunrise hike

The final day is for you. Many guests choose to do the sunrise trek up Mt. Batur. It’s an early start, but so very worth it! Get picked up at the hotel (you can sleep on the ride to the mountain). Your hiking guide will meet you at the base of the mountain and give you flashlights to light your path. You’ll reach the peak as the sun starts to light up the sky with stunning views, cook an egg in volcanic steam, and maybe make friends with some local monkeys. You’ll be back around 2 pm giving you time for a massage. Later in the evening, we’ll meet as a group for a final farewell dinner which is always a blast!

Day 7: Departures

Spend your morning getting last-minute shopping done before checking out and heading to the airport. If you have an afternoon flight, you can leave your bags with the hotel concierge while you laze by the pool until you're ready to go.

*The itinerary and service activities are subject to change based on the needs of the local communities and other factors (weather, ceremonies, traffic, school holidays, etc). Each trip is unique.

What to expect

The top priority of our trip leaders is to ensure your safety. Besides that, they will help you maximize your time in Bali, so you don’t have to spend your time finding the best – we’ve done that for you.

We cap our Bali group at 14 guests. This gives us just the right amount of people to connect with each other and be a manageable size for the places we volunteer.

Each guest will receive an extensive Bali Information Packet once they’ve registered and paid for their trip. This contains everything needed to prepare for the Service Trip, including a packing guide, money and exchange information, the Customs and Immigration process, useful phrases, and much more. Further, your trip leader will be available to answer any questions you have leading up to the trip.
